What Size Dumpster Do I Need Sized to the Finished Job

For most Biloxi homeowners the answer is a 10-yard box for one room or a small roof, a 15 or 20-yard for a kitchen, a bath or a typical tear-off, and a 30-yard for a flood-zone gut or a whole-house cleanout. Heavy debris like concrete changes the math: it calls for a small, low box no matter how much ground the job covers.

Size by the job you will finish

The yardage on a roll-off is a volume, so the honest way to pick one is to picture the debris pile rather than the house. A single bedroom of carpet, pad and furniture is a small pile. A kitchen with its cabinets, counters, flooring and the sheetrock behind them is several times larger. And in Biloxi the job you start is not always the job you finish: under the city's floodplain rules, once repairs or improvements in a flood zone reach half the building's market value, the whole structure has to be brought up to new-construction standards, elevation included. A remodel that tips over that line can turn a 15-yard job into a series of 30-yard hauls, so ask the Building Division where your project stands before ordering a box.

What sizes Coast haulers actually stock

Price lists from companies delivering in Biloxi, Gulfport and Ocean Springs cover a 7.5-yard box for concrete, then 10, 15, 20 and 30-yard containers, with a 40-yard listed by at least one for major demolition. A rough guide drawn from how those lists describe their own boxes:

  • 7.5 yards: broken concrete, brick and fill only. One Harrison County hauler builds it 6 feet wide, 12 feet long and just 3 feet tall, so it cannot be heaped past a safe weight.
  • 10 yards: a garage, a single room, light remodeling or a small roof.
  • 15 yards: a bathroom gut, a crowded garage, or a mid-size shingle roof.
  • 20 yards: a kitchen or bath remodel, a medium cleanout, or roofing on a house of up to roughly 3,000 square feet, by one Gulfport list's reckoning.
  • 30 yards: a large remodel, an estate cleanout or a commercial phase.

Same yardage, different shape

Two boxes with the same number on the side can look nothing alike. One Harrison County hauler builds its 10, 15 and 20-yard containers on the same 8 by 14-foot footprint and only raises the walls, topping out at 6 feet. An Ocean Springs list describes its 20-yard as 22 feet long with 4-foot walls. The tall, short box fits more Biloxi driveways; the long, low one is easier to toss shingles into from a ladder but needs about eight more feet of straight run. Measure the spot, including room for the truck to back in, before choosing between them.

Heavy debris breaks the size rule

Yardage only matters until weight takes over. Concrete, brick, roofing and wet sheetrock fill a rental's included tons long before they fill its walls, and one Gulfport list will only put dirt, concrete, brick or asphalt in its 10 and 20-yard sizes. For a slab or a driveway, order the smaller box and plan on more than one haul. The full explanation is on How Much Weight Can a Dumpster Hold?, and slab work is covered on concrete and heavy debris dumpsters.

Roofs on this coast

Since July 2026 the Mississippi Insurance Department has been paying toward FORTIFIED roofs for eligible wind-pool policyholders, and a FORTIFIED roof starts with stripping everything down to the deck. Get the roofer's square count and the number of layers before booking. A single layer on a modest house usually fits a 15-yard box with room to spare; two layers or replaced decking push it to a 20. Sizing a tear-off is covered in depth on roofing dumpster rental.

When you may not need a box at all

A few pieces of furniture may not justify a container. Biloxi's 2021 trash guide said curbside crews working under the Harrison County Utility Authority contract would take furniture and appliances, as long as refrigerators had their doors off and a tag showing the Freon was removed, and limbs cut to eight feet or less. The same guide drew firm lines: no stumps, no concrete, asphalt or dirt, and no waste generated by a contractor. Once a crew is tearing anything out, the debris is theirs or yours to haul, and that is where a roll-off earns its place.

Two boxes or one bigger one

On a long remodel, a smaller box swapped when full can beat one large container that sits half empty for weeks, and it keeps the footprint small on a tight lot in East Biloxi or Point Cadet. On a one-day job like a cleanout, one box that holds everything saves a second delivery.

What to tell the hauler

Name the materials, give a rough count of rooms or roofing squares, describe the drop spot, and say how long the work will run. Those four answers point to a size. Biloxi-area rates by size, with included tons and extra-day charges, are on the pricing page.
